Back to the Basics
A critically important theme in my campaign is that our nation needs to get back to the basics of how we govern ourselves.
•The lawmaking process has become very convoluted because the Democrats and Republicans have made it so partisan. Issues/problems need to be defined and framed without political bias. Facts and other information must be gathered from unbiased sources. Debating differences of opinion about what this information means can and should be vigorous. Votes must be honored as the majority will so that the focus becomes the next issue.
•Communication between representative and constituents must be two-way, open and genuine. Surveys with selective, partisan content or constricted choice options do not meet these requirements.
•A representative democracy must expect representatives to genuinely act in a manner that speaks and advocates for the best interests of those being represented and not an influential few.
•The phenomenon of people with common needs hiring lobbyists to promote legislation must be conducted within strictly regulated parameters. Lobbyists can and do perform an appropriate function but their influence must be limited to providing accurate information.
•Conducting election campaigns cannot continue to be so costly that only wealthy candidates are realistically able to seek election. Wealth and power are not synonymous with the ability to represent constituents well.
