How to Buy Jon's Vote

YOU CAN'T!!

My Democratic and Republican opponents in this campaign have been given lots of money. Many of you tell me that you are disgusted with how much campaigns cost and how the lawmaking process is more often than not inappropriately influenced by money donations and other forms of influencing power. America's democracy will not thrive - perhaps not survive - when a Machiavellian atmosphere exists. Might, in any form, should never be permitted to trump what's right.

People I talk to in the 3rd District want fair play to be one of the dominant values that guide our daily lives and how Congress operates. In a typical day for me (at least when I'm in the land of MN Nice) I see many examples of people doing the seemingly simple things that make our communities better. I see people holding doors for others, saying 'excuse me', helping a neighbor. The vast majority of drivers are willing to take turns merging for freeway on-ramps. The vast majority of Americans are honest in preparing tax returns. The vast majority of people put in an honest day's work, some even put in extra efforts. Legislation must be crafted in this same fairness spirit.

You can't buy my vote because it's not the right thing to do! I shouldn't give you extra privileges simply because you give me more money than others. It's not right. Persuade me with solid facts, with thoughtful arguments. That kind of activity supports a healthy democracy.
